The Ajda Pekkan song "Palavra Palavara" is a funny and cynical way to look at love. The lyrics speak of sweet and romantic words, but the title says it all... "Palavra!" The word "palavra" basically means deceit and dishonesty. It makes for a fun video from the 1970s, a bit out of time - with the cigarettes and mannerisms. But aside from the entertaining video, "Palavra" is a legal element that can be used to end a marriage.

How could "palavra" end a marriage? If two people choose to go their separate ways, the common route is divorce. This is usually based on a number of reasons. These COULD include -

- Adultery

- Physical or Mental Abuse

- Abandonment

- Imprisonment

- Irreconcilable Differences... and other reasons

This is only a general list. The ACTUAL grounds for divorce will depend on the region. But aside from divorce, a marriage could also be ended by annulment. Annulment is different than divorce. A divorce ENDS the marriage. In contrast, an annulment says the marriage was never VALID. In other words, it was "palavra," based on a weak foundation that was not legal. The reasons for annulment COULD include -

- Fraud (lying, deceit, "palavra")

- Bigamy (already being married)

- Mental Incapacity

Like divorces, the ACTUAL reasons for annulment could depend on state or regional law. These are not universal throughout the world. Each state in the U.S., each country, or region has its own conditions.
