Lighting off a steam locomotive is a fascinating thing, as the video here shows. It is like going back in history.... thinking about engineers shoveling coal into hot, noisy, black locomotives made of iron and steel - clouds of steam hissing all around. Such locomotives were once the workhorses that pulled passenger trains out of Haydarpaşa or Sirkeci Railway Stations in the 1930s. Although it is interesting to watch, it was a dangerous job, being around high-pressure steam, hot pipes, and coal fires in such a small space. With such jobs come special laws.
When it comes to accidents in the workplace, we usually apply workers compensation laws. Workers compensation does not depend on fault. Instead, the legal basis is that the accident occurs in the course of employment.
However, in history, there have been industries, such as rail, commercial fishing, offshore oil exploration, or others that have their own special laws. The reason is that some industries are known to present special risks. Although these specialized laws may be intended for specific industries, they can be similar to workers' compensation laws. Today, many industries present workers with dangerous hazards, such as construction, demolition, medical, etc. One could only imagine the dangers faced by the people who built Boğaz Köprü in the 1970s - Boğaziçi Köprüsü'nün İnşaat - https://youtu.be/wD-28IfRxIg?si=XoedDfd8ZxzEyHSn
One doesn't need to work near a high-pressure locomotive boiler for their job to be considered a dangerous occupation. In general, the purpose of all these laws is primarily to cover workers for their lost wages and medical expenses.
Wherever you work, please take care of your safety and the safety of others!
