Over one hundred years ago, one of the fiercest battles of World War I took place on the shores of Türkiye. In the narrow waters of Çanakkale (also known as the Dardanelles), Turkish soldiers and sailors fought off an invasion force of battleships, destroyers, and tens of thousands of soldiers from combined Allied armies. While the loss of life was tragic for all sides, military experts agree that this Gallipoli Campaign taught an important lesson... never underestimate your opponent.
This lesson holds true on the battlefield. And this lesson holds true in the courtroom. Do not underestimate your opponent. I've seen this happen many times. If a powerful law firm is up against a small attorney, the powerful firm may become complacent, and think...
(1) That little lawyer is like an ant to the judge - our powerful law firm is like a mighty lion
(2) That little lawyer does not have the time and money to conduct expensive research like us
(3) That little lawyer does not have our combined experience
(4) That little lawyer does not have our expensive experts - we will bury him
Well, sometimes "that little lawyer" is going to work twice as hard because the fight is important to them. In 1915, the fight to defend the mainland against invasion was desperate. Back in 1914, two Allied battle cruisers arrived and quickly defeated the weak shore defenses.
But when the Allies came back with a mighty armada in 1915, the defending Osmanli forces had learned some lessons. They strengthened their forts. They brought in artillery. They laid mines. The Allied generals admitted that they underestimated the will of the defending forces and such leaders as Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK'ÜN VASİYETNAMESİ - https://www.communityabroad.com/turkish/post/1000000050310
In one of the battles, the small Osmanlli destroyer Muavenet-i Milliye sank the mighty Allied battleship Goliath (pictured here, with permission from A Ship That Changed History: Muavenet-i Milliye - https://www.amazon.ca/Ship-That-Changed-History-Muavenet-i/dp/1095798103 The invasion forces ultimately withdrew.

I wouldn't dare to say that lawyering is the same as actual battle. At Çanakkale, soldiers and sailors risked their lives and made ultimate sacrifices. In contrast, lawyering is "safe" work with pen and paper. But the idea of not underestimating your opponent holds true in both settings. We honor the fallen soldiers and sailors of all sides.
