Growing up as a kid attending public school in the 1960s, the dress codes of my day were pretty simple. We couldn’t wear sneakers outside of gym class. On Fridays, we had to wear a white shirt and tie for a special occasion called “assembly,” where we’d gather for a class play or concert in the school auditorium. Things were different back then. Today, dress codes can sometimes lead to debate as to just how much control the law should have about what we want to wear.

Times sure have changed! Nowadays, we read about detentions for infractions of school dress codes involving everything from tank tops, shorts, hoodies, and sunglasses to controversial messages on t-shirts. Some parents are enraged when a child is sent home, while others actually participate in the design of strict school dress codes. It’s a legal debate that stirs strong passions. On one hand, civil liberties advocates argue that some of these clothing bans violate basic constitutional rights under the First Amendment. They feel that students should have the freedom to make decisions about what to wear when they leave the house. However, school authorities contend that school is not a bar or dance club. Attire that is too provocative or offensive, they feel, is a distraction to the educational process. In life, we are judged by what we wear, as the Nasreddin Hoca story "YE KÜRKÜM YE," https://www.communityabroad.com/turkish/post/1000000050113

This debate about dress codes isn’t only confined to the public school system. Giyim Kodları Neler? https://youtu.be/_8euYqGjyv8?si=7e1cadgDHVY2OBvO In some parts of the United States, lawmakers have passed ordinances banning the wearing of baggy pants that sag below the waistline. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects freedom of speech. And a choice of attire, so long as it doesn’t violate indecent exposure laws, comes under this protection as a freedom of expression.

While the issue is argued as one of personal choice, people in favor of strict ordinances say it’s their personal choice not to have to see someone’s underwear while going to the beach or amusement park with their families. But where does it end. Some public officials have banned going shirtless or barefoot on boardwalks. As a kid, we were always shirtless and barefoot on the boardwalk since we were wearing a bathing suit. If one thing seems clear, it's that we’ll probably always have debate on this matter of dress codes. And when it comes to formal settings, people will probably want to dress their best, as in a job interview, İŞ GÖRÜŞMEN NASIL GEÇTİ? https://www.communityabroad.com/turkish/post/1000000049355
